Give the Gift of Health

Happy Chinese New Year; the year of the horse!

And Valentine’s Day is coming up, a holiday many of us anguish over as we try to choose the best gift for our “sweethearts”. Flowers are only around for a few days and candy may only add to calories that we don’t need. So, what to do? May I suggest a personalized gift of health for your significant other? What about supplements, skin care and maybe an essential oil candle as a finishing touch to provide aromatherapy benefits? Here are some tips for building your special someone a healthy Valentine’s Day gift.

First, find a cool basket or recyclable shopping bag to bundle your assortment. When deciding on a supplement, if I were stranded on a desert island and could only choose one, I would choose vitamin C. Vitamin C is a significant anti-oxidant that helps with overall immune health and is essential for connective tissue growth and repair. Your ligaments, tendons and bones are the main connective tissue in the body and we all know how important these are for your general health and wellbeing. In the skin, the connective tissue is composed of elastin and collagen fibers, and these are responsible for keeping skin smooth and wrinkle free (something we all want, right?). So, go to your favorite health food store and get a bottle of Vitamin C 1,000 mg with rose hips. I highly recommend 1000 mg a day when you are feeling good. When you feel a cold or flu coming on, increase your intake to 5,000 mg a day.

For the skin, I recommend derma e® Evenly Radiant® Brightening products. These products have a healthy dose of Vitamin C but are also formulated with Vitamin B3, Alpha Arbutin and other natural actives that work on hyper-pigmentation issues. Most of us have at least one freckle or sun spot that we would just love to see fade away. There is a full regimen of Evenly Radiant® Brightening products but my favorite formula in this group is the Evenly Radiant® Dark Circle Crème. Dark circles can be triggered by many different things: allergies, adrenal fatigue, chronic illness or just plain not getting enough sleep. The dark circle you see is actually an accumulation of blood in the sub-orbital area so the solution is to “move blood”. Evenly Radiant® Dark Circle Crème contains Pycnogenol®, ginkgo, yarrow and Chinese herb tao ren (peach kernel extract), all known for their blood moving or circulatory properties.

evenly radiantNow, for a special candle. Life is stressful and lavender oil is one of the most relaxing and beneficial of the essential oils. That would be my pick, but maybe you want something uplifting like citrus or energizing rosemary? Another idea I have seen is glycerine soaps with essential oils added. These could be a great gift too.

Whatever you put into your basket or bag, it has the added dimension that you chose it, so there is a little of you in there too.

Happy Valentine’s Day.

Yours in Health,
Dr. Linda Miles DOM
